Although it is best known for its 105 Kms of magnificent, palm tree-lined beaches along the Arabian Sea. Goa has other attractions of significance. Among them are Portuguese Catholic Church of old goa and the Basilicas  (most of the mummified body of st.francis Xavier is exhibited there in occasion The coastline is indented by numerous deep, sheltered river estuaries, which account for the importance of Goa's harbours on ancient trade routes. Much of Goa's allure is its native Hindu culture combined with its Portuguese-Christian heritage. It has a long, colourful history dating back to 300 BC when it was part of the Mauryan Empire under the Buddhist king Ashoka.
